There is an abundance of stray cats in China. Each apartment complex has several families that live on garbage and sleep in parkades.
I’ve always liked seeing cats around our complex. They’re cute to watch and they keep rodents away, so there are several advantages to having them around. They don’t really bother anyone (they run and hide if you get too close) but are usually well fed from the dumpsters around the complex.
Recently, there has been a family of white cats hanging around near our building. There are 4 or 5 of them and they’re actually very well taken care of. I don’t know if it’s because they’re white with blue eyes, or maybe they were always quite friendly, but I’ve seen several Chinese residents bringing them food and playing with them.
I recently saw a group of boys, huddled around one of these cats. They looked like middle school students and my instinct was that they were probably tormenting the poor feline. But, as I got closer, I saw that they were playing with this cat. They were all delighted with its friendliness and that just made my day.
I was happy for the kids… I was happy for the cat.
